The document that helped initiate the American Revolution was the Declaration of Independence. One of the most famous phrases that comes from the document,  and enshrines the basis of all human rights documents is:  "all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness". 
The Declaration of Independence was drawn up by Thomas Jefferson during the time where there were gross violations of human rights being committed in the South of America, especially with regards to the treatment of the African American slaves.
