The term supercoiling refers to a bicatenary DNA molecule that is twisted or rotated about itself, such that the DNA's own double helix axis does not follow a flat curve but forms another helix, a superhelix. This term is used when scientists want to refer to a situation where the tertiary structure of chromosomal DNA is so wrapped that it allows the long strand to be compacted and fitted to the cytoplasm of the cell.
