Louisiana biologists tagged 250 fish in the oxbow lake False River on October 5. On a later date, they found 7 tagged fish in a

sample of 350 fish. Estimate the total number of fish in False River to the nearest hundred.
At a school, the school population is 2/5 boys. There are 450 boys in the school. How many total students are in the school?

A bag contains quarter and dimes in a ratio of 3:5. If there is $6 in quarters in the bag, how many dimes are there?

1. Set up a ratio:

7 tagged / 350 fish = 250 tagged / x fish

Solve for x:

x = (350 * 250) / 7

x = 12,500 fish

2. Divide number of boys by the population ratio:

450 / 2/5 =  (450 *5) /2 = 2250 / 2 = 1125 total students.

3.  4 quarters = $1, so they have 24 quarters total.

The ratio 3:5 means for every 3 quarters there are 5 dimes.

24 quarters / 3 = 8

8 x 5 = 40 dimes.

Victoria's spends 5/9 of her money on a flan and two chicken pies each chicken pie cost 1/6 as much as the fly Victoria has $24
Fynjy0 [20]

Answer:

Amount spent by Victoria = $30.

Cost of 1 flan = $22.50

Step-by-step explanation:

A.

Let x be total amount of money that Victoria had before purchasing the flan and chicken pies.

We have been given that Victoria's spends 5/9 of her money on a flan and two chicken pies and Victoria has $24 left. This means that 4/9 of total money is 24.

We can represent this information as:

\frac{4}{9}x=24

Let us solve for x.

x=24*\frac{9}{4}

x=6*9=54

Let us find 5/9 of 54 to figure out the amount spent by Victoria.

\text{Amount spent by Victoria}=\frac{5}{9}*54

\text{Amount spent by Victoria}=5*6=30

Therefore, Victoria spent an amount of $30.

B.

Let C be cost of one chicken pie and F be cost of one flan.

We have been given that each chicken pie cost 1/6 as much as the flan. We can represent this information in an equation as:

C=\frac{1}{6}F...(1)

We are also told that Victoria's spends 5/9 of her money on a flan and two chicken pies.

We can represent this information as:

2C+F=30...(2)

Upon substituting C's value in equation (2) we will get,

2*(\frac{1}{6}F)+F=30

(\frac{1}{3})F+F=30

Now let us have a common denominator.

(\frac{1}{3})F+\frac{3F}{3}=30

(\frac{1+3}{3})F=30

(\frac{4}{3})F=30

F=30*\frac{3}{4}

F=30*0.75

F=22.50

Therefore, the cost of one flan is $22.50.
