I believe that the event that can help develop the theme of love and duty in a story about two brothers in their early twenties, orphaned as infants, who care for each other, and as they have no other relatives, cannot bear to part is if one of the brothers falls ill with pneumonia.
This would probably put a strain on their relationship, and we would see how they fight and struggle to keep their relationship going and alive.
