allows people to feel that they can actively take steps to improve their situations. An internal locus of control means that people are more likely to accept blame when negative events happen. An internal locus of control equips people to deal with uncertainty in life by attributing negative events to outside forces.

Depression often happens because of the feeling of hopelessness and inability to improve a bad situation, in which a person found him or herself. A person with an external locus of control attributes major responsibility for such a situation to external factors, for example, other people or circumstances.  

Meanwhile, a person with an internal locus of control is always aware that he or she has the capacity to influence any situation to a certain extent. By taking active steps to improve such a situation a person can avoid the danger of falling into a depression altogether.
