The first convenience food was produced in the 19th century. It was the time when the World War I happened. Therefore, it was intended mainly for military use. Convenience food was expanded more while the canneries emerged at that time. Those industries concerned on producing the huge amount of convenience food quantities.

Contemporarily, there are many kinds of convenience food around the world. Each country has its typical convenience food. However, mostly convenience foods include frozen foods, ready-to-eat dry products, and prepared mixes such as cake mix. Products identified as convenience foods are often sold as hot, ready-to-eat meals; as room temperature, shelf-stable goods; or as refrigerated or frozen food products requiring minimal preparation such as heating.

Types of convenience foods are varied according to the country of origin and geographic region. However, there are some criticisms toward some convenience foods due to issues regarding nutritional content and the packaging that is not environmental friendly. Several countries have their regulation for this case. They filter what convenience foods that are considered healthy and unhealthy. Also, they make a regulation to what extent some ingredients within the product must be mounted. Here, a few countries with their typical convenience food:

1.      Republic of Ireland: breakfast rolls  

2.      Japan: onigiri (rice balls), prepared tofu (bean curd), and instant ramen noodles.

3.      Solomon Islands: canned tuna packed in oil  

4.      Russia: frozen pelmeni.

5.      Germany: Tinned Herring Fillets
