The Mandate of Heaven concept was used many times during Chinese history. It was used to justify the rule of a King or Emperor by the will of the skies or gods.

Under this doctrine, the ruler of the empire does not need to be born from noble birth. If a ruler was overthrown it was because he/she was unworthy and the gods had decided to favor another person.

Although a lot of dynasties used the doctrine, it was created by the Zhou Dynasty to explain why should they be the legitimate rulers of China instead of the Shang Dynasty.
