They pointed out corruption of Republicans and blamed Reconstruction for the problems facing the South.

The term "Scalawag" was used to refer to white people who supported the Republican Party and the Reconstruction.

They formed coalitions with black freedmen .

Democrats denounced they were corrupt. Democrats said that scalawags were financially and politically corrupt .

Later, during 1870, many scalawags left the Republican party and joined the Democrat coalition.
