The Schism of the West, also known as the Great Schism of the West (distinct from the Great Schism of the East and the West), and often called simply Great Schism or Schism of Avignon, refers to the division that took place in the Catholic Church in the period between 1378 and 1417, when two bishops, and from 1410 even three, disputed the pontifical authority.
