The progressive movement which was started to reform the society consisted of social workers, educators, lawyers, journalists to protect the common man helped mostly the middle class whites which eventually paved the way for the civil rights movement . The fight against racial discrimination continued through newspapers published by African Americans. Neither Roosevelt nor Wilson did much for the fight against segregation. The African Americans were a segregated unit even in the military during the war.</span>
