How do scientists use the Doppler effect to measure the actual motion of stars?

Doppler effect works using sound waves as well as light waves. It is used in studying the motion of objects in the Universe such as galaxies, planets as well as the stars. If things are moving toward someone it means wavelengths are being shortened.
