All living organisms possess genetic material in form of DNA that holds the information needed to produce useful products (proteins). Amino acids are the building blocks of these proteins. They form a sequence that specifies a particular protein. On the other hand, these amino acid sequences is determined by the sequence of nucleotides in the DNA.

The way by which this information held in DNA is expressed is called GENETIC CODE. The genetic code consists of all the triplet nucleotide called CODONS that specifies amino acids in all living things. This genetic code is Universal i.e. it is employed by virtually all living organisms. A particular CODON specifies the same amino acid in all living organisms. This shows the evolutionary relationship between all living organisms.

Hence, an amino acid sequence can show which sequence of nucleotides encodes it in the genetic code. Since it is the same in all living organisms, it can point out which organism shares evolutionary history.
