The central dogma is an important principle to biology, explaining the flow of information from DNA to functions that the cell can carry out. The central dogma says DNA --> RNA --> protein. Proteins carry out most biological functions in cells and organisms.

Genes on DNA have to be copied into a message in the form of RNA. DNA and RNA use the same language, so the message is transcribed (i.e. copied). The RNA then takes this message to the protein synthesis machinery, which uses a different language. Therefore, the RNA has to be translated into protein sequences
