O2(g effuses at a rate that is ______ times that of xe(g under the same conditions.
Snowcat [4.5K]

Answer:

2.02 times

Explanation:

According to<em> Graham's law</em>, the rate of effusion of two gases can be expresed as:

\frac{Rate_{1}}{Rate_{2}} =\sqrt{\frac{M_{2}}{M_{1}} }

Where M are the atomic/molecular masses of the gases.

In this problem, the subscript 1 refers to O₂ gas (32 g/mol), and the subscript 2 refers to Xe gas (131.293 g/mol).

Putting the data in the equation gives us:

\frac{RateO_{2}}{RateXe}=\sqrt{\frac{131.293}{32} }  =2.02

So O₂ effuses at a rate that is 2.02 times faster than the rate of Xe.

What factors could have affected your results?
AleksandrR [38]

Answer:

See below

Step-by-step explanation:

heat gained by metal + heat lost by water = 0

           m₁C₁ΔT₁           +         m₂C₂ΔT₂         = 0

C₁ = -(m₂C₂ΔT₂)/(m₁ΔT₁)

The factors determining C₁ are

  • mass of water
  • temperature change of water (T_f - Ti)
  • mass of metal
  • temperature change of metal (T_f - Ti)

Any factor that makes the numerator higher or the denominator lower than what you thought, will give a calculated C₁ that is too high (and vice versa).

The major sources of uncertainty are probably in determining the temperatures, especially the initial and final temperatures of the metal. However, you will have to decide what the principal factors were in your experiment.

For example, did the metal have a chance to cool during the transfer to the calorimeter? How easy was it to determine the equilibrium temperature, etc?

Factors Affecting the Calculation of Specific Heat Capacity

    Ti lower                                         Ti higher

    T_f higher                                       T_f lower

Metal                                              Metal

    Mass more than thought             Mass less than thought

    Ti higher                                       Ti lower

If we reverse the reaction to read Z + Q → X + Y, the +ΔH would be a -ΔH. Does this indicate that heat is given off or absorbed
rusak2 [61]
-delta H symbolises an exothermic reaction. Hence, it gives off heat. Reversely, it would absorb heat.
