So that structuralism was founded by Wilhelm Wundt who gave big importance to the mind above all. On the other hand, functionalists criticised this idea saying that psychology wasn't a true science because it wasn't relied on directly observations, so functionalist adopt the idea that studying the behaviour directly was the right way to do science in this field.

One of the reason was due to entry of ships, the canal locks would raise ships on one side of the isthmus, the ships would cross the lack and be lowered to sea by locks on the opposite side.

This helped in linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and providing a new route for international trade and military transport.
