<em>Functionalism, in psychology, arose at the end of 20th century as an alternative of structuralism. </em>

So that structuralism was founded by Wilhelm Wundt who gave big importance to the mind above all. On the other hand, functionalists criticised this idea saying that psychology wasn't a true science because it wasn't relied on directly observations, so functionalist adopt the idea that studying the behaviour directly was the right way to do science in this field.
