First you would distribute the 4 on the left side of the equal sign,

8x-20=5x+4.

You would then combine like terms by adding 20 to both sides,

8x=5x+24

You would then subtract 5x from both sides,

3x=24

Finally, you would divide 24 by 3.

24/3=8

8=x

Two boats leave a dock at the same time. One boat travels south at 32 mi divided by hr32 mi/hr and the other travels east at 60
TEA [102]

Answer: the rate at which the distance between the boats is increasing is 68 mph

Step-by-step explanation:

The direction of movement of both boats forms a right angle triangle. The distance travelled due south and due east by both boats represents the legs of the triangle. Their distance apart after t hours represents the hypotenuse of the right angle triangle.

Let x represent the length the shorter leg(south) of the right angle triangle.

Let y represent the length the longer leg(east) of the right angle triangle.

Let z represent the hypotenuse.

Applying Pythagoras theorem

Hypotenuse² = opposite side² + adjacent side²

Therefore

z² = x² + y²

To determine the rate at which the distances are changing, we would differentiate with respect to t. It becomes

2zdz/dt = 2xdx/dt + 2ydy/dt- - - -- - -1

One travels south at 32 mi/h and the other travels east at 60 mi/h. It means that

dx/dt = 32

dy/dt = 60

Distance = speed × time

Since t = 0.5 hour, then

x = 32 × 0.5 = 16 miles

y = 60 × 0.5 = 30 miles

z² = 16² + 30² = 256 + 900

z = √1156

z = 34 miles

Substituting these values into equation 1, it becomes

2 × 34 × dz/dt = (2 × 16 × 32) + 2 × 30 × 60

68dz/dt = 1024 + 3600

68dz/dt = 4624

dz/dt = 4624/68

dz/dt = 68 mph

Write the sentence as an absolute value inequality, then solve the inequality: A number “n” is more than 9 units from 3
Helga [31]

Answer:

absolute vlaue inequality: |x-3| > 9; solved: x<-6 and x>12

Step-by-step explanation:

I’m going to start this off by saying I learned all this right now by just searching up how to solve an absolute inequality equation and watching one video, so this might not be an accurate explanation. (I’m pretty sure the answer’s right though)

So an absolute value inequality must be written like this:

| x - a | *inequality* b

a is going to be the number that the inequality is centered around, in this case, 3. b will be how far you can deviate from that number, which in this case is 9.

Now, you will have this:

|x - 3| *inequality* 9

Now, to find the inequality, you need to understand the wording. If it says “more than” as it does here, then you would have the greater-than symbol (>). If you have “less than” then you’d have the less-than symbol (<). If the problem says “at least b away” then it would be greater-than-or-equal to (≥), and likewise, if it says “at most b away” then it would be less-than-or-equal-to (≤).

So now we're at:

|x - 3| > 9

To solve the equation, you just need to subtract 9(b) from 3(a) and add 9(a) to 3(b) to get -6 and 12. Since x must be more than 9 units away, you would get:

x<-6 and x>12

Hope this is helpful!

What are the expressions?
Romashka [77]
<h2>Explanation:</h2>

Here we need to solve some expressions. Remember the following rules:

(+)(+)=+ \\ \\ (-)(-)=+ \\ \\ (+)(-)=- \\ \\ (-)(+)=-

Then, from the left side:

5-2\cdot 7=5-14=\boxed{-9} \\ \\ 5-2\cdot 4=5-8=\boxed{-3} \\ \\ 5-2\cdot 0=5-0=\boxed{5} \\ \\ 5-2\cdot -3=5+6=\boxed{11} \\ \\ 5-2\cdot 10=5-20=\boxed{-15} \\ \\ 5-2\cdot -8=5+16=\boxed{21} \\ \\

from the right side:

-(-4)+3=4+3=\boxed{7} \\ \\ -(6)+3=-6+3=\boxed{-3} \\ \\ -(-8)+3=8+3=\boxed{11} \\ \\ -(-5)+3=5+3=\boxed{8} \\ \\ -(2)+3=-2+3=\boxed{1} \\ \\ -(15)+3=-15+3=\boxed{-12} \\ \\ -(-6)+3=6+3=\boxed{9}

An officer printer prints 25 photos in 12.5 minutes. A home printer prints 15 photos in 6 minutes. Which printer is faster, How
ollegr [7]

Answer:

The home printer is faster.

Step-by-step explanation:

25 photos in 12.5 minutes

12.5 is half of 25 and therefore this is a two to one ratio.

So 2 photos print in 1 minute with the office printer.

And 4 photos in 2 minutes(this is relevant later)

The home printer prints 15 photos in 6 minutes. Since 15 is not divisible by 6 without a remainder divide both by 3.

So 5 photos in 2 minutes. This is faster than the office printer.

To find how many photos it would print in 12 more minutes, simply multiply 15 by two, since the minutes(6) was multiplied by 2 to get 12. This leaves you with an answer of 30 photos in 12 minutes
