1. stay open-minded, if you are open minded then you tend to listen better
2. Keep anything that will distract you away if you get distracted by say staring at a phone you will lose focus. 
3. Keep eye contact with the person speaking eye contact will keep you engaged in the conversation
4. Talk about something you are interested in this will make sure you are listening
5. practice self-discipline keep yourself engaged by making yourself overcome any urges to get distracted.
