So the notebook costs 1.50 and then add in the cost of pencils which would be p (for the number of pencils) times $0.25. And the entire costs have to be less than or equal to $6.00. So the equation would look like this:
1.50 + 0.25p = 6.00
Solve for p:
4.50 = 0.25p
p = 18
Ted can buy 18 pencils and one notebook with his $6.00.
