Explain how a close relative of an African plant came to be living in the tropical pacific?

Continental drift.

Africa and the rest of the continents were once connected, creating a super continent called Pangea. Africa sat right above parts of South America so they had similar weather conditions and life forms. However, continental drift happened it led to the continents being split apart, separate the organisms on it.
