Answer: Third table

Step-by-step explanation:

  • A function is said to be linear if it has proportional relationship between the variables and has constant rate of change in dependent variable (y) with respect to independent variable (x).

In table 1, as the values of x increases the values of y first increase then decrease.

⇒It does not represent a function.

In table 2 , there is proportional relationship between variables but have rate of change is not constant.

Since for table 2, -5-(-2)=-3 and (-9)-(-5)=-4  [for one consecutive change in x]

⇒It does not represent a function.

For table 3, there is proportional relationship between variables and have  constant rate of change as -8.

-10-(-2)=-8,  -18-(-10)=-8 and  -26-(-18)=-8  [for one consecutive change in x]

⇒It represents a function.

For table 4, -4-(-2)=-2, -8-(-4)=-4

Thus it does not has constant rate of change.

⇒It does not represent a function.

Find each x-value at which the tangent line to f\left(x\right)=x^3-6x^2-34x+40 f ( x ) = x 3 − 6 x 2 − 34 x + 40 has slope 2.
LenKa [72]

Answer:

  x ∈ {-2, 6}

Step-by-step explanation:

You want the solutions to ...

  f'(x) = 2

Taking the derivative, you get ...

  f'(x) = 3x^2 -12x -34 = 2

Subtract 2 and factor:

  3x^2 -12x -36 = 0 = 3(x^2 -4x -12) = 3(x -6)(x +2)

The values of x that satisfy this equation are the values of x that make the factors be zero: x = 6, x = -2.

The slope of a tangent to the curve will be 2 at x=-2 and at x=6.
