At the time that Fredrich Wohler conducted his experiments to prove that organic compounds may be synthesized in the lab, there was a theory known as vitalism. In this theory, it was believed that the principles governing the origins and principles of life are different from the principles of chemistry and physics. If no organic compounds had ever been synthesized, the theory of vitalism might still be a widely accepted one.
