Explanation:  The civilization of ancient Egypt rose precisely thanks to the Nile, whose occasional seasonal flooding made dry desert land rich in minerals and as such a fertile ground for agricultural development.

The surrounding land was deserted anyway, so the Nile did not draw water and make the surrounding land more dry than it used to be.

What would happen occasionally were huge devastating floods, beyond those seasonal ones, usual, when the effect would be destructive, because much more water would be poured out than needed to fertilize the land.
