I believe correct answer is neuroplasticity.

Explanation:

The brain is made up off special cellular tissue called neurons. They interlin and number in millions in the brain and communiate through use of neurotransmitters and electrical impulses. They also arise from stem cells in the human body and are formed during the process of embryogeneis. In the event a part of the brain is damaged, the neurons reorganize to fill the deficit in this process called neuroplasticity. -plasticity is the ability of cells or tissues to repair after damage.

Further Explanation:

Neurons in the brain and everywhere in the body cannot repair because of the kind of cell cycle they undergo during the process of mitosis. The cell cycle of neurons is very different from other neurons. Neurons undergo the same cycle as the cells or the heart called cardiocytes and lack the ability to repair themselves when damaged or produce new daughter cells. In other cells, the cycle starts with the G1 phase where the cell is checed for errors and prepares for division. The cell then enters the S or the synthesis phase where DNA synthesis occurs producing 2 pairs of chromosomes that will be used in the process of cell division. Next, the cell enters the G2 or Gap 2 phase where the cell is again checked for errors and organelles inside the cell that is dividing duplicate. The cell then enters the M phase or the mitosis phase where the cell undergoes 5 stages namely Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase and Telophase. In the final step called the Telophase stage, the cell undergoes a process called cytokinesis that forms 2 identical daughter cell. The cell can either enter the G0 phase to rest or start the cycle afresh. Neurons lack this luxury since they enter the G0 phase and stay there until they die irrespective of the situation. The end result is lack of neuroplasticity incase some neurons are damaged.

What you've described is called Plasticity

Also known as neuroplasticity or neural plasticity, it is a term used for the brain's ability to change itself and mold, like plastic, even in adulthood and when fully developed. This occurs for various reasons, not only due to physical damage.
