General Westmoreland was the chief commanding officer during the Vietnam War. He was chosen by President Lyndon Johnson in June 1964 to command the U.S. Military Assistance Command in Vietnam. During the war, he directed much of U.S. military strategy and led the buildup of American troops in the region. After General Westmoreland’s tenure, Creighton Abrams took over.
