Answer: The reaction is given below.

Explanation:

Dolomite is a carbonate ore of calcium and magnesium. Its chemical formula is CaMg(CO_3)_2.

Another name of vinegar is acetic acid and its chemical formula is CH_3COOH

The reaction between vinegar and dolomite follows the equation:

4CH_3COOH+CaMg(CO_3)_2\rightarrow Ca(CH_3COO)_2+Mg(CH_3COO)_2+2CO_2+H_2O

By Stoichiometry of the reaction:

4 moles of acetic acid reacts with 1 mole of dolomite to produce 1 mole of calcium acetate, 1 mole of magnesium acetate, 2 moles of carbon dioxide and 1 mole of water.

Arrange the ions N3-, O2-, Mg2 , Na , and F- in order of increasing ionic radius, starting with the smallest first. Arrange the
Bond [772]

Answer:

Order of increasing ionic radius starting from the smallest is

Mg2+ < Na+ < F- < O2- < N3-

Explanation:

Ionic radius is the distance between the nucleus and the electrons in the outermost shell of an ion. In the ions given about, it can be deducted that they all have the same number of electrons and are said to be isoelectronic. This shows us that they all have the same electrons and we can only seperate them by checking the respective charges on the ions. A more positive charge will have a smaller radius while a more negative will have a larger radius. This is because when an atom loses an electron and form a cation (+), the remaining electrons move closer to the nucleus and hence a smaller radius of the atom occurs. But when an atom gains n electron,it forms anion (-), the new electron leads to the shielding of the remaining electrons from the nucleus and a large radius of the atom occurs.

So therefore, the above ions all have 10 electrons in their shells and magnesium with atomic number 12 and having lost 2 electrons to become positively charge has the smallest radius compared to others.

Mg2+ = 12 protons, 10 electrons

Na+ = 11 protons, 10 electrons

F- = 9 protons, 10 electrons

O2- = 8 protons, 10 electrons

N3- = 7 protons, 10 electrons

N3- has the largest ionic radius and Mg2+ has the lowest ionic radius.

The order is thus, Mg2+ , Na+, F-, O2-, N3-

In which of the following cases would recrystallization be favored over extraction when purifying a mixture of two solid compoun
777dan777 [17]

Answer:

B. II.

Explanation:

The idea of recrystallization works when the solubility of the target substance decreases as the temperature of the solution decreases.

The method of recrystallization involves dissolving the solute in a suitable hot solvent and then allow the solution to cool gradually. The pure solute dissolves in the hot solvent and then separates out of the solution as it is cooled to room temperature.

Hence recrystallization is preferred over solvent extraction when the desired compound is poorly soluble in the solvent pair at low temperatures and greatly soluble in the solvent pair at high temperatures.

A researcher studying the nutritional value of a new candy places a 4.10 g sample of the candy inside a bomb calorimeter and com
Ierofanga [76]

Answer:

5.078 Cal/g

Explanation:

We are given;

Mass of the sample of candy as 4.10 g

Change in temperature, °C = 2.1 °C

Heat capacity of the calorimeter, C = 41.50 kJ/K

We are required to calculate the nutritional Calories per gram of candy

Since the Candy sample was burnt

Then the heat lost by the candy is equivalent to the heat absorbed by the calorimeter.

Therefore, we need to calculate the heat energy absorbed by the calorimeter.

Quantity of heat = Heat capacity × Change in temperature

Q = C×Δt

Q = 41.50 kJ/K × 2.1 K

  = 87.15 kJ

Therefore;

The heat released by 4.10 g of candy is 87.15 kJ

Calories per gram = Heat energy ÷ mass of candy

But; 1 kJ = 4.186  Calories

Therefore;

Number of calories =  87.15 kJ ÷ 4.186 Claories/kJ

                                = 20.82 Calories

Hence, calories per gram = 20.83 Cal ÷ 4.10 g

                                          = 5.078 Cal per g

                                          = 5.078 Cal/g

Thus, the nutritional Calories per gram of candy is 5.078 Cal/g

Describe why silica gel chromatography is Chem 08LA Lab Manual Winter 2020 Page | 21 a good method of separating methyl orange f
Reptile [31]

Answer:

Silica gel chromatography is a s good method for separating these methyl orange and biphenyl because of the wide difference in their polarity. Biphenyl will give a higher Rf value because it is a non-polar and moves faster on silica gel.

Explanation:

Silica gel is very polar, so polar components (like methyl orange) interact with and move slowly it but non polar components (like biphenyl) move faster on silica gel. Looking at their chemical structures, methyl orange has a polar end while biphenyl is a non-polar hydrocarbon. During silica gel chromatography, the methyl orange will interact with silica gel and move slowly but the biphenyl will move fast on the gel because it does not interact with silica gel. This will result to a very distinct separation of the components.

The biphenyl will therefore have a higher Rf value on TLC because it will move faster and longer on the TLC plate.
