Free soldiers wanted to contain slavery while Abolitionists wanted to completely get rid of slavery and prevent it from being legal in new territories.

A long-term effect was the creation of the GI Bill towards the end of the war.  And, it helped to change the status of women in American Society, which also helped to the push of Civil Rights.
