Primary consumers get more energy from eating plants (producers)
Secondary and Tertiary consumers don't get as much from eating other consumers because most of the energy is lost. Therefore they have to eat a lot of each other to survive.

The biomass pyramid describes the total mass of an organism and as a biomass moves up, the overall mass is losing volume. This means it decreases as it moves from the bottom to the top.
