Answer:

The sides are 3 and 7 cm long.

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the lengths be x and x+4 cm, then

(x + 4)^3 - x^3 = 316

x^3  + 12x^2 + 48x + 64 - x^3 = 316

12x^2 + 48x + 64 - 316 = 0

12x^2 + 48x - 252 = 0

12(x^2 + 4x - 21) = 0

12(x + 7)(x - 3) = 0

x = -7, 3

So one cube has side of length  3 cm.

The other has side 3+4 = 7 cm.

Two different ways to find the difference for 12-3
Aleksandr-060686 [28]
You can either ask "How much is left when you take 3 away from 12?", or you can ask "How far apart are the numbers 12 and 3 on the number line?"

Another way you could think about it is "what number do I have to add to 3 to get to 12?"

Bas_tet [7]
First you turn 1 1/3 in an improper fraction (5/3)
And then turn 3 2/3 into an improper fraction (11/3)

Then you just straight up multiply 5/3*11/3= 55/9
