One of the arguments against this theory is that incest taboos anticipate any scientific understanding of human genetics which could not be the cause.

Further explanation:

The incest taboo is a cultural rule or norm that forbids sexual relations between kin or relatives. When two genetically-related individuals have sexual relation then it results in inbreeding. Every culture has norms regarding marriage or sexual partners.

INCEST TABOOS

In every culture, there is little agreement with whom an individual can marry. Most of the cultures prohibit marriages between close relatives. To marry someone with whom an individual grew up has been discouraged in many cultures.

The close genetic relationship between two individuals, the more highly or stronger charged is the taboo discouraging or prohibiting sexual relations between those individuals. The sexual intercourse between a daughter and a father, a son and a mother, or a sister and brother is universally prohibited.

Incest taboos vary enormously in immediate family members and beyond immediate family members. For example, matrilineal societies of Melanesia, the taboo there include classificatory siblings who have the same descent from the same matrilineal.
