Christopher believes that metaphors are lies since they do not reflect actual facts. Further, his name is a metaphor, which means "carrying Christ". ... His distaste for ambiguous language is again made clear with the example of metaphor. Throughout the novel, we learn that Christopher has trouble understanding anything that is not literal. He considers metaphors to be lies, because he does not understand them. He also has trouble reading signs because they are not literal enough.
