During the War of 1812 the US executed a plan to invade and seize Canada, it was intended to be such a bold stroke that would end the war. James Madison asked William Hull, the government of Michigan to lead the invasion, he reluctantly took the task and proceeded to invade Canada.

At the time, Canada consisted of two provinces - Upper Canada and Lower Canada - and Hull planned to invade both provinces at the same time.

The problem was that the attack leaked to the press and Canada forces were able to repel it. This led to the surrender of Fort Detroit without a fight, Hull feared for the lives of women and children.
