Explanation:

Sulfur dioxide reacts with water in the air to form acids. These toxic gases are the result of industrial emission into the atmosphere. Acid rains have a high concentration of proton therefore low pH. Acids rains are disruptive for aquatic life, flora and fauna, with additional damage to man-made steel structures.  

Sulfur dioxide is oxidized to sulfur trioxide which then combines with water to form sulfuric acid.  

SO₃(g) + H₂O(l) → H₂SO₄(aq)
