In 1785 he was elected governor of Pennsylvania, and devoted himself fully to the construction of the American nation. In 1787 he began to emphasize his career as an abolitionist, being elected president of the Society to Promote the Abolition of Slavery, at the earliest start of a long process that would lead decades later to the Civil War.
