This depends on the time - mosaics were used in many different times in history.

For example, the Romans often portrayed their mythodology - check for example the attached roman mosaic from an Austrian museum - it portrayed the labyrinth and the story of Minotaur.

So a very common there was mythodologyOften, fruit or animals were portrayed. Sometimes - abstract symbols.

And yes, mosaic is still used today - I've seen it in an underground station in Vienna recently!

What is the Japanese "Fifth Column" that was used in World War II that everyone was so afraid of?
Aleks04 [339]
Emilio Mola, a Nationalist Genral during the Spanish Civil War, told a journalist in 1936 that as his four columns of troops approached Madrid, a "fifth column" of supporters inside the city would support him and undermine the Republican government from within. The term was then widely used in Spain. Ernest Hemingway used it as the title of his only play, which he wrote in Madrid while the city was being bombarded, and published in 1938 in his book The Fifth Column and the First Forty-Nine Stories[1]Some writers, mindful of the origin of the phrase, use it only in reference to military operations rather than the broader and less well defined range of activities that sympathizers might engage in to support an anticipated attack. Madeleine Albright for example, in a lengthy account of German sympathizers in Czechoslovakia in the first years of World War lI, reserves it for their possible response to a German invasion: "Many, perhaps most, of the Sudetens would have provided the enemy with a fifth column".[2]

Genrish500 [490]

Answer:

The first eight words of Lincoln's last paragraph proclaim an enduring promise of reconciliation "bind up the nation's wounds" caused by the Civil War and to move toward a lasting peace. In his inaugural address, Lincoln promised not to interfere with the institution of slavery where it existed, and pledged to suspend the activities of the federal government temporarily in areas of hostility. The main point of Lincoln's second inaugural address was to claim that both the South and North had to share some of the blame for the sin of slavery. Throughout the address, Lincoln doesn't talk about retribution or punishment; themes that were expected by many in the North. Instead, he calls for peace among all Americans.
