Homeostasis se define como un estado de relativa estabilidad dentro del medio interno de un organismo, teniendo composición y propiedades definidas dentro de un rango, las cuales deben ser cumplidas para asegurar el correcto funcionamiento del medio interno. Es precisamente el asegurar el correcto funcionamiento lo que hace importante que las condiciones internas permanezcan dentro de un rango constante. Por ejemplo, si la concentración de iones en la sangre es elevada las células pueden deshidratarse y encogerse hasta morir; o bien si la concentración de iones es baja las células pueden hincharse hasta explotar.
