What is Magna Carta?

Magna Carta which means ‘The Great Charter’, is one of the most important documents in history as it established the principle that everyone is subject to the law, even the king, and guarantees the rights of individuals, the right to justice and the right to a fair trial. The whole document is written in Latin, and the original Magna Carta had 63 clauses.

Significance of Magna Carta:

The Magna Carta is believed to be one of the first steps taken in England towards establishing parliamentary democracy. There are strong impacts from the Magna Carta in the American Bill of Rights, written in 1791. To this day there is a 1297 copy in the National Archives in Washington DC. Even more recently, the basic principles of the Magna Carta are seen very clearly in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, penned in 1948 just after World War II.

In 1215, King John was forced to sign Magna Carta. King John was the king in 119 when the previous king who was his brother, King Richard the Lionheart died without children. Yet, King John had a bad temper and very cruel. He was hated by the English Barons.

In 1215 English Baron decided to rebel because they thought they had had enough of John’s high taxes and personality. English Barons went to London, led by Baron Robert Fitzwalter and made negotiation with King John. Magna Carta was granted under the threat of civil war and reissued, with alterations in 1216, 1217, and 1225. Magna Carta served the foundation for people's rights in Anglo-American jurisprudence by documenting the liberties held by free men and declaring the sovereign to be subject to the rule of law.

Illusion [34]

In an effort to convince Italy to join the allies after it renounced the triple alliance, in 1915 the allies promised Italy the dalmatian coast in the treaty of London.

The Treaty of London (Italian: Trattato di Londra) or Treaty of London (Patto di Londra) was a secret agreement signed by Britain, France, Russia, and Italy on April 26, 1915. Convince the latter to join the First World War on the side of the Triple Entente. The pact included Italian territorial expansion commitments to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Ottoman Empire, and Africa with promised colonial expansion. The Entente nations hoped to force the Central Powers, especially Germany, and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, to divert part of their forces from the existing battlefield. Entente also hoped Romania and Bulgaria would be encouraged to join them after Italy did the same.

Treaty of London (April 26, 1915) A secret treaty between neutral Italy and the allied forces of France, Britain, and Russia to bring Italy into World War I. The Allies wanted Italy to join because of its border with Austria. Italy was promised regions such as Trieste, South Tyrol, and North Dalmatia in exchange for a promise to join the war within a month. Despite opposition from most Italians who favored neutrality, Italy entered the war with Austria-Hungary in May.
