Short-term memory can also be referred to as primary memory, it is the ability of capacity  to hold information actively in the mind for a short period of time. The information is usually retained in the mind in a conscious state, but can be lost rapidly from the mind when the individual is distracted.

Buster trying to repeat the number as he approaches the phone, helps the telephone number stay in the short term memory of Buster; but if he is distracted as he approaches the phone, he might loose the information, since it is not yet stored in his long term memory.
