Colchicine is a drug that is used for the treatment of severe gout attacks. The excess of uric acid in the blood which forms crystals in the area of joints. This collection of uric acid crystals causes gout and severe pain in the joints. The colchicine drug is used to decrease the building up of uric acid crystals and swelling. The pain in the, chest, abdomen, or joints are also smoothened by this drug and therefore, the nurse administers colchicine intravenously in order to avoid aggravating the gastrointestinal tract.
