In spite of that, he was friendly, and I recalled that Mr. Frank had been aware of this man's membership in the Dutch Nazi Party

before he'd gone into hiding, since the man had worn a party pin under his lapel. I remember that Mr. Frank had commented, "This man you can trust. I know he's not a Nazi at heart. He must have joined the NSB because he was hanging around with a bunch of young men who joined. Being a bachelor and needing a social life, that's why he joined too." Which theme can be inferred from this excerpt? Mr. Frank had several associates in the Nazi Party. People cannot always be judged by their affiliations. Miep trusts Mr. Frank’s assessment of people’s characters. People are willing to forgive others who treat them cruelly.

Answer:

People cannot always be judged by their affiliations.

Explanation:

Being a member of the Nazi Party was not a desirable friendship trait for someone who was not a member of the same party. In the passage we are given two examples of people who, despite their membership in the party, are trustworthy people.

The first example is the unnamed man mentioned to have given away his membership by wearing a pin. It is said that despite this accessory he was not a Nazi at heart. The other example is Mr. Frank, a friend or at least close acquaintance of the author.

A) Vonnegut uses satire in this excerpt by describing a society that has taken the idea of equality too far

By referencing the idea that everyone is equally intelligent, or perhaps unintelligent, thanks to the Handicapper general, who apparently hobbles people who were born with certain gifts. This obviously isn't good, and suggests that the idea of equality is being taken to the extreme in 2081.
