Multiply the first equation by 5 to use the elimination method.

-5x+25y=-90
5x-9y=10

16y=-80
y=-5

Plug this y value into one of the original equations.

-x+5(-5)=-18
-x-25=-18
-x=7
x=-7

Final answer: (-7,-5)

zhuklara [117]
If you divide them equally then it would be 21% of riboflavin and 21% of protein then you would have take 2% away from the riboflavin so that would make it 19%. So i think the answer is 19% of riboflavin and 21% of protein.

Find S^20 if the series 1 + 1.1 ..... is a (a) arithmetic (b) geometric
quester [9]
I'm guessing S^20 is actually referring to the 20th partial sum S_{20}, with

S_{20}=1+(1+1\times0.1)+(1+2\times0.1)+\cdots+(1+18\times0.1)+(1+19\times0.1)

in the arithmetic case, and

S_{20}=1+1.1+1.1^2+\cdots+1.1^{18}+1.1^{19}

in the geometric case.

(a) Combining like terms, we have

S_{20}=20+0.1(1+2+\cdots+18+19)

and invoking the formula

1+2+\cdots+(n-1)+n=\dfrac{n(n+1)}2

we end up with

S_{20}=20+0.1\dfrac{19\times20}2=39

(b) Multiply S_{20} by 1.1, then subtract this from S_{20}:

1.1S_{20}=1.1+1.1^2+1.1^3+\cdots+1.1^{19}+1.1^{20}

S_{20}-1.1S_{20}=-0.1S_{20}=1-1.1^{20}
\implies S_{20}=\dfrac{1.1^{20}-1}{0.1}\approx57.275

Why does using FOIL on polynomial expressions match so closely to integer multiplication?
dezoksy [38]
<span> FOIL is a mnemonic rule for multiplying binomial (that is, two-term) algebraic expressions. </span>
<span>FOIL abbreviates the sequence "First, Outside, Inside, Last"; it's a way of remembering that the product is the sum of the products of those four combinations of terms. </span>

<span>For instance, if we multiply the two expressions </span>
<span>(x + 1) (x + 2) </span>
<span>then the result is the sum of these four products: </span>
<span>x times x (the First terms of each expression) </span>
<span>x times 2 (the Outside pair of terms) </span>
<span>1 times x (the Inside pair of terms) </span>
<span>1 times 2 (the Last terms of each expression) </span>
<span>and so </span>
<span>(x + 1) (x + 2) = x^2 + 2x + 1x + 2 = x^2 + 3x + 2 </span>
<span>[where the ^ is the usual way we indicate exponents here in Answers, because they're hard to represent in an online text environment]. </span>

<span>Now, compare this to multiplying a pair of two-digit integers: </span>
<span>37 × 43 </span>
<span>= (30 × 40) + (30 × 3) + (7 × 40) + (7 × 3) </span>
<span>= 1200 + 90 + 280 + 21 </span>
<span>= 1591 </span>

<span>The reason the two processes resemble each other is that multiplication is multiplication; the difference in the ways we represent the factors doesn't make it a fundamentally different operation. </span>
