These colonies were obtained during the period of imperialism during the mid to late 1800's. The colonies were obtained to gain access to raw material resources as well as markets. They were also strategic areas for military ports and naval bases. The imperial holdings were kept as colonies until the 20th century.
Prices fell naturally when millitary demand for items fell. People cashed in their savings bonds and had extra money. Following wartime shortages and restrictions, consumers were eager to buy.
