In a study using a sample of n=9 participants, the individuals who wore a t-shirt produced an average estimate of M=6.4 with SS=

162. The average number who said they noticed was 3.1. Is the estimate from the participants significantly different from the actual number? Test the null hypothesis that the true mean is µ=3.1 using a two tailed test with a=.05.

Answer:

z=\frac{6.4-3.1}{\frac{4.5}{\sqrt{9}}}=2.2

p_v =2*P(Z>2.2)=0.0139

If we compare the p value and a significance level given \alpha=0.05 we see that p_v so we can conclude that we have enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis, so we can conclude that the lifetime is signficantly different from 3.1.

Step-by-step explanation:

Data given and notation

\bar X=6.4 represent the sample mean

\sigma represent the population standard deviation

n=9 sample size

\mu_o =3.1 represent the value that we want to test

\alpha=0.05 represent the significance level for the hypothesis test.

SS=162 represent the sum of squares.

z would represent the statistic (variable of interest)

p_v represent the p value for the test (variable of interest)

State the null and alternative hypotheses.

We need to apply a two tailed  test.

What are H0 and Ha for this study?

Null hypothesis:  \mu = 3.1

Alternative hypothesis :\mu \neq 3.1

Compute the test statistic

The statistic for this case is given by:

t=\frac{\bar X-\mu_o}{\frac{s}{\sqrt{n}}} (1)

t-test: "Is used to compare group means. Is one of the most common tests and is used to determine if the mean is (higher, less or not equal) to an specified value".

Calculate the statistic

First we need to calculate the sample deviation given by this formula:

S= \sqrt{\frac{SS}{n-1}}=\sqrt{\frac{162}{8}}=4.5

We can replace in formula (1) the info given like this:

z=\frac{6.4-3.1}{\frac{4.5}{\sqrt{9}}}=2.2

Give the appropriate conclusion for the test

Since is a two tailed test the p value would be:

p_v =2*P(Z>2.2)=0.0139

Conclusion

If we compare the p value and a significance level given \alpha=0.05 we see that p_v so we can conclude that we have enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis, so we can conclude that the lifetime is signficantly different from 3.1.

Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

This is an exponential equation that is solved by taking the natural log of both sides.  The equation is

f(x)=2^x

If we are looking for x when f(x) = 64, then

64=2^x

Take the natural log of both sides:

ln(64)=ln(2^x)

The rules of logs allows us to bring the x down in front:

ln(64)=xln(2)

Divide both sides by ln(2) to get:

\frac{ln(64)}{ln(2)}=x

Do this on your calculator to get that x = 6.

You could also have just gone right to your calculator and started raising 2 to consecutive powers starting at like 3 or 4 to eventually get that 2 to the 6th power is equal to 64, but for the basics of solving log equations, you need to know how to do this.
