This law that ruled from 1996 o 2013, prohibited the marriage of people from the same sex, which meant they were not granted the privileges such as partner's employment benefits, tax exemptions, and protection against domestic violence. The Defense of Marriage Act prohibited the states to authorize same-sex marriage.
