The first Europeans to settle permanently in these areas were from Spain. Hispanic settlers populated in these places where they engaged in ranching and farmers. They considered being excellent horsemen. By 1821, when Mexico gained its independence from Spain, they became the largest population in which now we knew New Mexico.
