professor190 [17]

Particulate material that quickly loses its energy as it travels through the air, has limited penetrating power, and can be stopped by clothing or a sheet of paper is known as alpha particles

What is penetrating power of radiation?

The ability of each type of radiation to penetrate matter is expressed by its ability to penetrate. The more radiation a material passes through, the greater the penetration power and the more dangerous it is. In general, the greater the mass current, the greater the ionization strength and the lower the penetrating power.

Comparing only three common types of ionizing radiation, the alpha particle has the largest mass. Due to the large mass of the alpha particle, it has the highest ionizing strength and greatest tissue damage potential. However, the same large size of these alpha particles makes them less likely to penetrate matter. Alpha particles have the least penetrating power and can be stopped by a thick sheet of paper or even a layer of clothing. They are also blocked by the outer layer of dead skin on the body. This seems to remove the threat of alpha particles, but only from outside sources.
