A food chain is a linear series of transmission of energy in the form of food.  This transmission of energy occurs when organisms of the lower trophic levels are consumed by the organisms of the higher trophic levels. A food web is an interconnection or network of food chains.  

In a given food web, if the predators or organisms of the second consumer trophic level like wolf, snake and hawk are removed. Then the organisms of the primary consumer trophic levels will increase in number due to abolishment of predation.
