First, rearrange the equation so that only zero will be on the right side:

x^2 + 14x +24 = 0

Let the coefficients be:

a = 1

b = 14

c = 24

To complete the square, add (b/2)^2 to both sides of the equation:

(b/2)^2 = 49

x^2 + 14x + 49 + 24 = 49

x^2 + 14x + 49 = 25

(x+7)^2 = 25

Therefore, the solution set of the equation is {-12, -2}

Identify the expression for calculating the mean of a binomial distribution.
Gre4nikov [31]
A random variable X following a binomial distribution with success probability p across n trials has PMF

\mathbb P(X=x)=\begin{cases}\dbinom nxp^x(1-p)^{n-x}&\text{for }x\in\{0,1,\ldots,n\}\\\\0&\text{otherwise}\end{cases}

where \dbinom nx=\dfrac{n!}{x!(n-x)!}.

The mean of the distribution is given by the expected value which is defined by

\mathbb E(X):=\displaystyle\sum_xx\mathbb P(X=x)

where the summation is carried out over the support of X. So the mean is

\displaystyle\sum_{x=0}^nx\binom nxp^x(1-p)^{n-x}

Because this is a proper distribution, you have

\displaystyle\sum_x\mathbb P(X=x)=1

which is a fact that will be used to evaluate the sum above.

\displaystyle\sum_{x=0}^nx\binom nxp^x(1-p)^{n-x}
\displaystyle\sum_{x=1}^nx\binom nxp^x(1-p)^{n-x}
\displaystyle\sum_{x=1}^n\frac{xn!}{x!(n-x)!}p^x(1-p)^{n-x}
\displaystyle np\sum_{x=1}^n\frac{(n-1)!}{(x-1)!(n-x)!}p^{x-1}(1-p)^{n-x}
\displaystyle np\sum_{x=1}^n\frac{(n-1)!}{(x-1)!((n-1)-(x-1))!}p^{x-1}(1-p)^{(n-1)-(x-1)}

Letting y=x-1, this becomes

\displaystyle np\sum_{y=0}^{n-1}\frac{(n-1)!}{y!((n-1)-y)!}p^y(1-p)^{(n-1)-y}

Observe that the remaining sum corresponds to the PMF of a new random variable Y which also follows a binomial distribution with success probability p, but this time across n-1 trials. Therefore the sum evaluates to 1, and you're left with np as the expression for the mean for X.

A jetliner uses 3,600 gallons of fuel per hour while it is cruising, and there are 15,000 gallons of fuel in the jetliner's fuel
coldgirl [10]

The equation to represent the relationship between x and y is y = 15 - 3.6x .

In the question ,

it is given that

fuel used by jetliner per hour = 3600 gallons

fuel available in the jetliner = 15000 gallons

Given that y represents the amount of fuel remaining in the tank after x hrs.

As the unit of y is in thousands of gallon

So , according to the question

the equation becomes ,

y = 15 - 3.6x

For plotting the graph

Substitute x= 1hr , y = 11.4  , (1,11.4)

x = 2 ,  so y = 7.8     , (2, 7.8)

x = 3 , so y = 4.2      , (3,4.2)

x = 4  , so y = 0.6    , (4,0.6)

Therefore , the equation is y = 15 - 3.6x , the graph of the equation is drawn below .

What is the mean (average) of 2,4,5,6,8
irina1246 [14]

Answer:

5

Step-by-step explanation:

In order to figure out average, we need to add up all the numbers. So adding 2, 4, 5, 6, and 8 gives us 25. We now divide that total by the total number of terms we used to reach 25. So since we had 5 numbers, we divide 25 by 5 to get an average of 5.
