Comets orbit the sun in large elliptical orbits. Comets can be classified based on the period of their orbits. Comets which lie in Kuiper belt have period of orbit less than 200 years. Hence, these are known as short period comets where as long period comets reside in Oort cloud having orbital period of more than 200 years.
