Permanent changes in behavior through experience happens when the information stored in the short-term memory is transferred to the long-term memory. In that respect, the short-term memory has a limited capacity, its data decays fast and it is easily changed. However, if the knowledge stored in the short-term memory is rehearsed or exercised, it is sent to the long-term memory.
Alberta is a school teacher who introduces children to reading by teaching them a rhyme that goes "A for apple, A says ah, B for ball, B says buh," and so on. This exemplifies the <em>Phonics</em> approach to reading instruction.
