Why do you think absolute rulers still exist today?

(I think) modern absolute rulers are product of traditional governmental practices and/or a culture/government that sees it suitable to have such a system.

Absolute rulers still exist today because of uncertainty, fear, and armies lead to revolts and conflicts. It also has something to do with culture of the country where such practices applied.

   

EXPLANATION:

Here is a list of five nations that are ruled by the Kings and Sultans:

 

• Vatican City

Vatican City covers 110 hectares of land and has inhabitants of 842. This is the smallest independent country. The country is governed by the Pope, the Bishop of Rome, from the Catholic Church. The Pope has legislative, executive and judicial powers to govern the country. The Vatican has its song and flag. This is the only country that is not yet a member of the United Nations. At present, the city is ruled by Pope Francis.

 

• Swaziland

This is an independent country in South Africa. People in the nation took their name from Mswati II. The smallest nation in Africa is government by Ngwenyama (King) Mswati III who rose the throne in 1986 after the death of his father King Sobhuza II. The head of state assigns the Prime Minister and other parliament’s representatives. The government is divided by the king and his mother based on their tradition. She is called the Ndlovukati. If the king's mother is no longer alive, the government is divided by one of his wives. Swaziland is a member of the United Nations.

 

• Oman

The Sultanate of Oman is one of the Arabian countries. The country is ruled by the Sultan, Qaboos bin Said al Said, who has self-appointed himself as the Sultan of the country. It is said that the Sultan of Oman forbid criticism and very few privileges have been given to the Omani citizens. The Omani government selection of who can be censorship and journalist is very common. Omanis cannot open a public meeting without the government’s approval. The laws are created to forbid any kind of criticism over the Sultan.

 

• Qatar

This is the most conservative community and follows strict Wahhabi interpretations of Islam. Sheikh Mohammed bin Thani was a selected leader after the establishment of the House of Thani. The Al Thani family has been governing Qatar since 1825. Qatar does not permit the political parties’ formation or other organizations. Qataris can hear about international agreements but never if the agreement benefits citizens. Emir Hamad is responsible for cultural and social decisions.

 

• Andorra

Officially, it is recognized as the Principality of Andorra. It is the sixth smallest country in Europe and has a populace of about 85,000. It is known as the domain as it is ruled by two princes, the President of France and the Roman Catholic Bishop. The country obtains most of its economy from business and tourism. It has the most moderate tax laws. The country receives about 10 million tourists per year. Andorra does not have its armies but in the time of natural disasters, all men without a disability must serve the country.
